The visit

The combined ticket gives you the opportunity to visit the Museums of the Opera del Duomo, MODO, centered around one of the most important monuments of the artistic heritage of humanity: the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, pilgrimage center and sanctuary of the Eucharistic Miracle. The Cappella Nova or of San Brizio in the right transept is a major art treasure, with frescoes by Fra Angelico and above all Luca Signorelli.

Cartina Percorso MODO

The visit moves through the Collections of the Opera del Duomo, following the leitmotif of the story of the city and its Cathedral illustrated by the paintings, sculpture and other objects collected and jealously safeguarded by the Cathedral and the Fabbriceria in over eight centuries. The itinerary includes three separate sites: Palazzo Soliano, the Papal Palaces and the Church of Sant'Agostino, at the other end of the city in the heart of the medieval quarter.

The starting point for the MODO museum visit is the Emilio Greco Museum with the tourist reception center, ticket office and educational services on the ground floor of Palazzo Soliano in Piazza Duomo.

The extraordinary medieval architectural complex of the Papal Palaces, flanking the cathedral and the oldest ensemble of buildings created specifically for the popes in Orvieto, houses the collections of the Museum of the Opera del Duomo: The Fresco Gallery (14th-15th century) on the Ground Floor, and the Room of the Maestà and three other Rooms with paintings, sculpture, wooden objects, mosaics, liturgical vestments, gold and silversmiths' works (13th-17th century) on the First Floor. The complex includes the Room of Sinopias, with the preparatory drawings for the frescoes in the Chapel of the Corporal and other paintings, sculpture, gold and silversmith's works, liturgical objects in wood (13th-20th century).

Mappa Palazzi Papali

An interesting and pleasant walk that winds through the streets, piazzas and art treasures of the historical center of Orvieto takes the visitor to the Church of Sant'Agostino in Piazza San Giovenale. Annex of the Museum in Piazza del Duomo, this is where temporary exhibits are generally to be found. Currently the premises house the statues of the Apostles and Patron Saints dating to between the late sixteenth and early eighteenth century, and the splendid group of Francesco Mochi's Annunciation (1603-1608). Other thematic segments and selections from the collections of the Opera del Duomo will eventually be exhibited here.
